Why are people allowing more and more security cameras in City centers and Public spaces?

It seems to me that America is becoming an open air prision. With all these security cameras popping up in big cities now, I feel like our collective privacy is a thing of the past. Whats next, two way TV sets to monitor us as we watch television.
For those who support them, don’t you see the inherent danger. The slow move toward a totally monitored society. I know they have proven to be beneficial at times, but at what cost and I don’t mean monetary, and where does it end. This is just the begining.
