Why is it that for cameras the closer a reflective object is to the lens the more blurred it is from the light

Can you explain this through optics and physics?
I was taking pictures of snowflakes and I noticed that the ones far away are distinguishable and dark, but if there too close the light from the flash reflects more into the cameras eye, thereby making it blurry.
Why?
