which one is better: digital power shot camera or the skinny new cameras?

i am leaving to mexico next year but i wanna buy a camera some time soon. so i was wondering if i should get the fat powershot cameras that use AA batteries or the smaller skinier digital cameras.? which one would yall reccomend?
